A note from our practice

Seeking mental health support is vulnerable enough on its own. But when you are a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, the search for a therapist carries an entirely different, much heavier layer of anxiety.

If you have ever sat across from a healthcare provider and felt the sudden need to edit your pronouns, hide your partner’s gender, or brace yourself for a microaggression, you know exactly how exhausting this process can be. You might have experienced the frustration of having to spend half of your paid session “educating” your therapist on basic queer terminology. Or worse, you may have been deeply hurt by a past provider who treated your sexual orientation or gender identity as a “phase,” a symptom, or a pathology that needed to be fixed.

You should never have to hide parts of yourself to receive the care you deserve.

At Counseling Group of the Ozarks, we believe that true mental healthcare requires absolute, uncompromising safety. Located in Springfield, MO, and available statewide via secure Missouri telehealth, we proudly offer explicitly LGBTQIA+ affirming therapy.

We are not just “LGBTQ-friendly” or merely tolerant. We provide a fiercely validating, celebratory environment where your identity is honored, your lived experience is respected, and you are free to bring your whole, authentic self into the therapy room.

What we help with

The Weight of the World: Why Affirming Care Matters in the Ozarks

Living in Southwest Missouri and the broader Midwest offers a beautiful sense of community, but it can also present unique challenges for queer, trans, and non-binary individuals.

Even if you are completely comfortable and proud of who you are, navigating a world that isn’t always built for you takes a massive toll on your nervous system. Our affirming counselors understand the specific cultural and regional dynamics of the Ozarks. We provide specialized, trauma-informed support to help you navigate:

Minority Stress and Daily Burnout

Minority stress is the chronic, daily friction of navigating a society that frequently misunderstands or marginalizes you. It is the exhaustion of constantly scanning a room to see if it is safe to hold your partner’s hand, or the fatigue of repeatedly correcting colleagues on your pronouns. Over time, this chronic stress severely impacts your physical and mental health, often leading to severe anxiety, depression, and burnout. We help you process this invisible weight, giving you the tools to protect your energy and set firm boundaries.

Gender Identity and Transition Support

Whether you are just beginning to question your gender identity, are in the active stages of social or medical transition, or have been living as your authentic self for decades, our space is safe for you. We provide gender-affirming therapy that honors your timeline. We offer a supportive environment to explore your identity, navigate the complexities of gender dysphoria, and build genuine gender euphoria without ever acting as a gatekeeper to your autonomy.

Religious Trauma and Spiritual Abuse

Unfortunately, many LGBTQIA+ individuals in the region have experienced profound rejection, shame, or spiritual abuse within their religious or faith-based communities. Reconciling your spirituality with your identity—or recovering from the trauma of being cast out of a community you once loved—is an incredibly complex grieving process. Our clinicians offer a deeply compassionate, non-judgmental space to unpack religious trauma, heal from purity culture, and define what peace looks like for you moving forward.

Coming Out and Complex Family Dynamics

Coming out is rarely a single, one-time event; it is a continuous process that often shifts family dynamics. Whether you are preparing to come out to your parents, navigating a spouse’s transition, or dealing with family members who refuse to respect your identity, we provide the grounding support you need. We help you build a chosen family, establish healthy boundaries with biological relatives, and process the grief that sometimes accompanies these transitions.

How we help

How We Help: Evidence-Based Therapy Through an Affirming Lens

It is important to note that you do not have to be struggling with your identity to seek affirming therapy. You might just be dealing with a stressful job, a breakup, or generalized anxiety, and you simply want a therapist who inherently gets it so you don’t have to explain yourself.

Whatever your goals are, Counseling Group of the Ozarks integrates highly effective, evidence-based clinical modalities through an explicitly affirming lens. Because our practice houses eight diverse providers, we can match you with a clinician who possesses the right clinical expertise for your needs.

Depending on your unique journey, your individual counseling roadmap may include:

DBT for Emotional Regulation

Teaching Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills to help you manage the intense emotional distress, rejection sensitivity, and anxiety that often accompany minority stress.

CBT for Anxiety and Depression

Using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to dismantle the internalized shame or harsh inner critic that society may have projected onto you, replacing it with self-compassion and grounded confidence.

Who we serve

Support for LGBTQIA+ Youth and Teens (Ages 5 and Up)

Growing up queer or trans is incredibly difficult, and the current social and political climate has placed an unprecedented amount of pressure on LGBTQIA+ youth. As a parent, you want nothing more than to see your child thrive, but you may feel unequipped to support them through the complexities of gender exploration or coming out.

Mental health matters at every stage of life. Our clinical team includes clinicians who work with children as young as 5 and with teens, providing age-appropriate, affirming support.

Call (417) 409-3008
Do I have to talk about being LGBTQIA+ in my sessions?

Not at all. Your identity is a vital part of who you are, but it does not have to be the focus of your therapy. If you are coming to us to work through a career transition, grief, or a phobia, we will focus entirely on those goals. Our affirming approach simply means you will never have to hide who you are while we do that work.

What if my legal name on my insurance doesn’t match my chosen name?

This is incredibly common, and we are well-versed in navigating it discreetly. When you fill out your intake paperwork, there will be a space for your legal name (required for insurance billing) and a prominent space for your chosen name and pronouns. From the moment you walk through our doors or log into our telehealth platform, we will honor and use your chosen name.

Can I do my therapy sessions online?

Yes! We know that finding a genuinely affirming therapist locally can sometimes be difficult, especially if you live in a rural area of the Ozarks. We offer secure, HIPAA-compliant Missouri telehealth sessions for anyone in the state, allowing you to receive top-tier care from the safety and privacy of your own home. If you prefer in-person care, our Springfield office provides a warm, welcoming, and discreet physical space.

How do you match me with the right therapist?

Finding the right fit is crucial. Because we have eight diverse providers on staff, our administrative team will carefully review your specific needs, your age, your clinical goals, and your preferences to ensure you are matched with a clinician who truly understands your experience.
