A note from our practice

Seeking mental health support requires courage. But when you are a person of color, finding a therapist who truly understands your lived experience can feel like an exhausting uphill battle.

If you have ever sat across from a healthcare provider and felt the invisible, draining weight of having to explain your cultural background, translate your family dynamics, or brace yourself for microaggressions, you know exactly why traditional therapy often feels out of reach. You might have experienced well-meaning providers who completely missed the mark, viewing your symptoms through a narrow, Westernized lens while ignoring the very real, systemic pressures of racial trauma, cultural expectations, or intergenerational stress.

Worse yet, you may have been made to feel like your cultural traditions, family obligations, or racial identity were symptoms to be diagnosed rather than strengths to be honored.

You should never have to compromise your cultural identity or shrink yourself to receive effective mental healthcare.

At Counseling Group of the Ozarks, we believe that healing must be rooted in cultural humility and profound respect. Located in Springfield, MO, and available statewide via secure Missouri telehealth, we proudly offer culturally responsive BIPOC counseling. We provide a warm, deeply validating space where your complete story—your heritage, your intersecting identities, and your unique challenges—is seen, respected, and valued.

What we help with

The Invisible Weight: Why Culturally Responsive Care Matters

Living as a person of color in the Ozarks or the broader Midwest comes with a unique set of experiences. While our community offers wonderful connections, navigating a world shaped by systemic inequalities takes an undeniable toll on your mental and physical well-being.

Our clinicians understand that your mental health cannot be separated from your cultural context. We provide specialized, trauma-informed support to help you navigate:

Racial Trauma and Systemic Stress

Racial trauma—whether caused by overt acts of discrimination, systemic bias, or the constant microaggressions you encounter at work, school, or in daily life—is a very real, physiological injury. It is the exhaustion of hypervigilance, the anger of being misunderstood, and the heavy burden of feeling like you always have to perform twice as hard to get half as far. We provide a safe, validating space to unpack racial battle fatigue without being gaslighted or having your experiences minimized.

Intergenerational and Family Expectations

In many BIPOC families and communities, cultural values like deep respect for elders, familial obligation, and collective responsibility are core pillars of identity. However, they can also sometimes create intense pressure, boundary struggles, or guilt when your personal goals clash with traditional expectations. We help you honor your heritage while building healthy, sustainable boundaries that protect your own mental well-being.

Navigating Predominantly White Spaces (PWIs)

Whether you are navigating a corporate career, a university setting, or a predominantly white neighborhood in Southwest Missouri, constantly being the “only one in the room” requires immense emotional labor. The pressure to code-switch, assimilate, or suppress parts of your culture just to fit in leads to profound isolation and burnout. Therapy offers a place to take off the armor, exhale completely, and just be.

Intergenerational Trauma and Immigration Stress

The echoes of historical trauma, displacement, or the immense sacrifices made by immigrant parents often ripple down through generations. You might carry the unexpressed grief, survival instincts, or anxiety of your ancestors in your own nervous system. We provide a compassionate environment to process these deep ancestral weights, allowing you to break cycles of pain while preserving the beautiful cultural legacies you inherited.

How we help

How We Help: Evidence-Based Care Through a Multicultural Lens

You do not have to be in active crisis or dealing specifically with racial trauma to benefit from therapy. You might be navigating garden-variety stress, relationship struggles, grief, or career anxiety, and you simply want a therapist who inherently understands your cultural framework so you don’t have to waste time explaining the basics.

Whatever your goals are, Counseling Group of the Ozarks integrates highly effective, evidence-based clinical modalities through a culturally humble, responsive lens. Because our practice houses eight diverse providers, we will thoughtfully match you with a clinician who possesses the right expertise and empathy for your journey.

Do I have to talk about race or culture in every session?

No. Your cultural identity is an essential and beautiful part of who you are, but it does not have to dictate the entire agenda of your therapy. If you are coming in to work through grief, a career transition, or relationship stress, we will focus directly on those goals. Our culturally responsive approach simply means your therapist already understands the broader context of your life, saving you from microaggressions and cultural translation fatigue.

Can I do my therapy sessions online?

Yes! We know that finding a culturally responsive therapist locally can sometimes feel nearly impossible, particularly in smaller towns across the Ozarks. We offer secure, HIPAA-compliant Missouri telehealth sessions for anyone in the state, allowing you to receive top-tier, respectful care from the safety and comfort of your own home. If you prefer in-person sessions, our Springfield office provides a warm, welcoming, and discreet physical environment.

How do you match me with the right therapist?

Finding the right therapeutic fit is critical to successful healing. Because we have eight diverse providers on staff, our administrative team will carefully review your specific needs, background preferences, and clinical goals to ensure you are paired with a clinician who respects your lived experience and matches your needs.

What if I’ve had bad experiences with therapy in the past?

It is completely valid to feel hesitant if a previous healthcare provider dismissed your background or misunderstood your culture. Many of our clients come to us after disappointing experiences elsewhere. We invite you to move at your own pace; there is never any pressure, and your boundaries will always be honored.
