A note from our practice

It can be incredibly lonely to feel miles apart from the person sitting right next to you on the couch.

When you first committed to your partner, you likely envisioned a future built on mutual support, shared laughter, and unwavering trust. But relationships are complex, living ecosystems. Over time, the stressors of daily life, unspoken expectations, and unresolved disagreements can slowly erode that foundation.

Perhaps every conversation lately feels like walking through a minefield, where a simple question quickly spirals into a massive, exhausting argument. Maybe the fiery connection you once shared has faded into a quiet, functional roommate dynamic. Or perhaps a sudden life transition, a breach of trust, or a major disagreement about the future has left you wondering how—or even if—you can move forward together.

At Counseling Group of the Ozarks, we want you to know that struggling in your relationship does not mean you have failed. It simply means the tools you have relied on to communicate are no longer working.

Located in Springfield, MO, and accessible statewide via Missouri telehealth, our team provides a warm, unbiased, and incredibly supportive environment to help you and your partner untangle the mess, rebuild your connection, and rediscover the joy in your partnership.

What we help with

Navigating the Complexities of Your Relationship

Seeking marriage counseling or couples therapy is a proactive, courageous step toward protecting the relationship you have built. Because our practice houses eight diverse, highly skilled providers, we are uniquely equipped to match you with a therapist who understands the specific dynamics of your partnership.

We work with couples at every stage of their relationship—from dating and premarital counseling to long-term marriages navigating the challenges of empty-nesting. Here are some of the most common challenges we help couples overcome in our Springfield office:

Breaking the Cycle of Chronic Conflict

Do you find yourselves having the exact same argument over and over, just with different details? This happens when couples get trapped in a negative communication loop—often a cycle of one partner pursuing and criticizing while the other withdraws and defends. Our couples counselors help you step out of this exhausting cycle. We act as an unbiased mediator, helping you translate anger and frustration into clearly communicated needs so you can finally feel heard by your partner.

Healing After a Breach of Trust

Whether it is emotional infidelity, physical infidelity, or financial betrayal, a broken promise can shatter the foundation of a relationship. The aftermath is often chaotic, filled with intense grief, suspicion, and pain. Therapy provides a deeply structured, safe container to navigate this crisis. We help the hurt partner process their trauma while guiding the offending partner in rebuilding transparency, accountability, and ultimately, a renewed sense of trust.

Reclaiming Intimacy and Emotional Connection

Over time, the demands of careers, parenting, and household management can push intimacy to the bottom of the priority list. You may feel like you are co-managing a life rather than sharing a romance. Our clinicians help you bridge the gap between emotional and physical intimacy, providing actionable strategies to prioritize your connection and rediscover the spark that brought you together in the first place.

Navigating Major Life Transitions

Even positive changes can put immense strain on a relationship. Having a new baby, relocating to the Ozarks, changing careers, blending a family, or transitioning to retirement requires a massive shift in how you operate as a team. We provide a collaborative space to ensure you remain united, helping you align your goals and adapt to your new normal without leaving each other behind.

How we help

How We Help: The Counseling Group of the Ozarks Approach

Couples counseling is distinctly different from individual therapy. In this setting, the relationship itself is the client. Our therapists do not take sides, keep secrets, or act as a referee to determine who is “right” and who is “wrong.”

Instead, we utilize evidence-based relationship modalities to uncover the deeper emotions driving your conflict. Here is what you can expect from our collaborative approach to relationship therapy:

Identifying the Root Cause

We look beneath the surface of your arguments about chores or finances to identify the deeper emotional unmet needs—such as the need to feel valued, respected, or secure.

De-escalating the Tension

We teach you in-the-moment emotional regulation skills so you can pause a heated argument before it causes lasting damage.

Building Actionable Skills

Therapy isn’t just about talking; it’s about doing. We equip you with practical tools to use at home, teaching you how to listen actively, validate your partner’s perspective, and compromise effectively.

What if my partner refuses to come to therapy?

This is a very common scenario. If your partner is hesitant or entirely unwilling to attend couples counseling, you can absolutely still seek individual therapy to work on relationship issues. By changing your own communication style, setting healthy boundaries, and managing your own reactivity, you can often positively shift the dynamic of the relationship even if your partner isn’t in the room.

Do you offer premarital counseling?

Yes. Premarital counseling is one of the best investments you can make in your future. We help engaged couples proactively discuss critical topics like financial management, parenting philosophies, extended family boundaries, and conflict resolution before walking down the aisle.

Is it better to do couples counseling in-person or online?

This is entirely dependent on your preference and schedule! Our physical office in Springfield provides a quiet, neutral space away from the distractions of home. However, if coordinating childcare, work schedules, or commuting is causing friction, our secure Missouri telehealth platform allows you to attend high-quality sessions from your living room.

How long are the sessions, and how often will we come?

Standard couples sessions are typically 50 to 55 minutes. We usually recommend attending weekly at the beginning of the process to stabilize the relationship and build momentum. As your communication improves and the conflict decreases, we will slowly space sessions out to bi-weekly or monthly check-ins.
